Mental Health Assessment
for School Age Children

When something seems different with your child, it can be difficult to know what’s going on or what to do next. You may be noticing changes in behavior, difficulty focusing, increased worry, sadness, emotional outbursts, problems at school, or simply a sense that something isn’t quite right.

Our comprehensive mental health assessment for school-age children gives parents a clearer picture of their child’s emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. Using research-based assessment tools, along with information from your child, parents, and when appropriate, teachers, we look at concerns related to attention, anxiety, mood, behavior, and overall emotional wellbeing.

Once the assessment is complete, you’ll receive a detailed written report and meet with your counselor to discuss the results, recommendations, and possible next steps. The goal is to replace uncertainty with useful information so you can make informed decisions about counseling, medical care, school support, or other resources your child may need.

When Should I Consider a Mental Health Assessment?

You don’t have to know exactly what’s wrong before asking for help. In fact, that’s one of the reasons an assessment can be so valuable.

Parents may consider an assessment when they notice:

  • Difficulty focusing, sitting still, or completing tasks

  • Excessive worry, fears, or anxiety

  • Frequent sadness or changes in mood

  • Anger, frustration, or emotional outbursts

  • Changes in behavior at home or school

  • Difficulty making friends, or maintaining friendships

  • Declining grades or new struggles at school

  • Low self-esteem or negative self-talk

  • Difficulty adjusting to family or life changes

  • Concerns raised by a teacher, pediatrician, or other professional

  • A noticeable change in their child’s personality or behavior

  • A general feeling that something isn’t quite right

Sometimes there isn’t one obvious concern. An assessment can help bring together information from different areas of your child’s life and provide a clearer picture of what may be contributing to the difficulties you’re seeing.

How a Counselor Guides Your Family Through This Process

Choosing a mental health counselor to guide this process gives your family a thoughtful, personal approach that many parents find comforting. A counselor spends time getting to know your child, listening to your concerns, and understanding the challenges you see at home and at school. This relationship helps ensure that the evaluation reflects the whole picture, not just a quick screening. Once complete, you can take the results to your child’s pediatrician to support conversations about accommodations, school needs, or any next steps. Many families appreciate having a clear, detailed report in hand when meeting with teachers, pediatricians, or other providers who are helping their child succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions
We’ll Answer

What can a mental health assessment help identify?

The assessment looks at different areas of your child’s emotional and behavioral health, including attention, anxiety, mood, behavior, social functioning, and overall wellbeing. The goal is to better understand the concerns you’re seeing and determine what type of support or additional evaluation may be appropriate.

No. This is a comprehensive mental health assessment conducted by a licensed mental health professional. It can identify symptoms and areas of concern that may be consistent with ADHD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions, but it is not the same as a full psychological, neuropsychological, or psychoeducational evaluation.

If the results indicate that additional testing or evaluation would be beneficial, we’ll discuss that with you as part of your child’s recommendations.

Your child will meet one-on-one with the counselor in a comfortable, supportive environment. The counselor will talk with your child and use age-appropriate, research-based assessment tools to better understand their emotions, behavior, attention, and overall wellbeing.

Parents will also provide information, and teachers may be asked to complete questionnaires when appropriate. Looking at your child across different environments helps us develop a more complete picture than we could get from a single conversation or questionnaire.

Not always, but teacher input can be very helpful when concerns involve attention, behavior, social interactions, or school performance. With your permission, a teacher may be asked to complete questionnaires about what they observe at school.

Yes. You’ll receive a detailed, multi-page written report explaining the assessment results in understandable language. Your counselor will also meet with you to review the findings, answer questions, and discuss recommendations and next steps.

Yes. The written report belongs to you, and you can choose to share it with your child’s pediatrician, school, or other professionals involved in their care.

The report may provide helpful information when discussing your child’s needs, although individual schools, physicians, and other organizations determine what documentation they require for specific diagnoses, services, or accommodations.

The assessment may provide useful information when talking with your child’s school about their needs. However, schools have their own evaluation processes and requirements for determining eligibility for an IEP, 504 Plan, or specific accommodations.

We cannot guarantee that an assessment will result in school accommodations, but the findings can help you better understand your child’s needs and give you information to bring into conversations with the school.

We’ll talk through the findings with you and provide recommendations based on your child’s individual needs. Recommendations might include counseling, talking with your pediatrician, additional psychological or educational testing, school support, or other appropriate resources.

You won’t simply receive a report and be left wondering what to do with it. The follow-up appointment is designed to help you understand what the results mean and what your next steps could be.

The complete assessment is $495. This includes the initial parent consultation, administration and scoring of the assessment tools, parent and teacher questionnaires when appropriate, a detailed written report, and a follow-up appointment to review the findings and recommendations.

Our assessments are designed for school-age children. During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss your child’s age, concerns, and circumstances to determine whether our assessment is appropriate for their needs.

That’s exactly what the initial consultation can help determine. Tell us what you’ve been noticing and what concerns you have. We can discuss whether an assessment makes sense or whether beginning with counseling or another type of evaluation may be a better next step.

The first step is to schedule a parent consultation. This gives us an opportunity to learn about your concerns, answer your questions, and determine whether the assessment is appropriate for your child. From there, we’ll schedule the assessment and guide you through the process.
